Our Story
In the summer of 1987, I began building the home my family and I still live in today. It was an extremely challenging piece of land to build on. People told me I could never build a house there. That same summer, I came together with a small group of people who shared the vision to start a different kind of church than Anne Arundel County had ever seen before. People told me we could never build a church like that here. But nothing’s impossible with God.
In 1986, I became friends with a man who was my CPA at the time. It turned out that we were both followers of Jesus. His name was Dave Hatcher. We started going to Grace Fellowship Church with our wives every week. The church was dynamic. The music was captivating. We agreed that this was the kind of church we needed in our area. Anne Arundel County is a truly special place. There’s an undercurrent of activity – brothers and sisters who labor under the radar screen to be used by God to do great things. So we began quietly meeting. This was the very beginning of Bay Area Community Church. Grace Fellowship had a vision to ring the whole Baltimore beltway with churches. They found a man named Mike Metzger, and our group was completed. It was time. So Dave became our first worship pastor, and Mike became our first teaching pastor. Greg St. Cyr first came to Bay Area in 1994. When Mike Metzger moved on to begin a new ministry, Greg St. Cyr became Senior Pastor here. That was 1997. He still serves BACC in that role today. God works in and through the Church. I’m committed to that. It’s for this reason that I’ve always been dedicated to the building in which we now meet. I would drive past our property on my way to work, and almost every day I stopped and drove my Jeep around the open lot. I called it “four-wheel drive prayer.” I prayed that God would bring to completion the building that He wanted and we needed. I prayed for our footprint in the greater Annapolis community. It’s exciting to look back at how far God has brought Bay Area. I’m blessed to have been a part of it all, behind-the-scenes. And I’m blessed to be a part of Bay Area today. —David Mann, one of the original 18 founding members of Bay Area Community Church |
